We have been home for a few days now and we’re getting back to our daily routines. Elijah as readjusted to Central Time better than I have which I think is great! He sure is happy to have his taquitos, strawberry yogurt and Chef Boyardee raviolis now that he is back in the States!! The look on Elijah’s face when we got home to his dogs was priceless! He sure did miss body slamming them and feeding them his dinner from his highchair.

I am very glad that we decided to go as a family to Dar el Awlad. Yes, it was hard work. Yes, I was getting a little flustered with Elijah towards the end of the trip since he was extra clingy to me. Although we had a toddler to take care of which made the trip a little harder I am extremely grateful that we were able to experience all of this as a family. The staff at DeA were very hospitable and were helpful with chasing and corralling my little one. Everyone showed him so much love and compassion. I love how their eyes filled with joy when playing with him or watching him chase the cats. They say it takes a village to raise a child and we couldn’t have survived the trip (with our sanity intact) without the help of our team members and everyone at DeA. Thank you.

The boys at DeA were amazing and I truly miss them. I was driving home today after taking Elijah to the park and couldn’t help but think of the boys and how I wish I could take them to the park with Eli. They would have loved it. I miss listening to their laughter and watching them play soccer.

The trip was truly amazing. It was wonderful to see how God is working at DeA through the staff and through the boys. I think of the boys and pray for them frequently. I wish Lebanon was closer so I could see them more! I can't wait until we can visit them again and see how much they have grown. I am so happy to be apart of Calvary's continued love and support for the children and staff at Dar el Awlad.

There is so much to write about; I'm not sure where to begin.

The Shoes!!
First, I'm so encouraged by Calvary's partnership with Dar El Awlad. We're only 1 of 2 groups they receive all year. When the boys received their shoes on Tuesday, many of them have had the same donor family multiple times now. It's great that the boys have formed relationships with many of you. It's not just from the shoe donations, but from meeting you in person during summer trips. As I was walking around the room, I noticed that many of the boys were writing long notes to you because they knew you and were deeply grateful for your generosity. Thanks be to God for a church that has loved these boys for many, many years.

The River
This is the boys only trip to the river all year and of course they love it. Like most roads in Lebanon, the rode to the river was very windy and full of ups and downs. The river is in a beautiful valley with lush green trees and jagged rocks lining surrounding it. I was very impressed by the wonder of it all. Unfortunately, cooler weather had arrived and we were under lots of shade, both by the overcast sky and all the trees cover. Most of the boys had goosebumps and were shivering the entire time because the water was very cold and there was no relief from the sun. Nevertheless, they loved it all anyway. Many of them stayed in the water the majority of the day, splashing, jumping, and spinning as they took it all in. The older boys were allowed to go to another part of the river that had rocks they could jump off. They would jump off the rocks, swim back to the shore, and climb the rocks and jump again. They counted each time and made it a competition among themselves. Many of them, at the end of the day, had jumped off the rocks 25+ times!

The Valley
The Bekaa (sp?) valley was very different from the mountainside city of Beirut. The humidity was lower, but the sun's presence was greater. I didn't quite know what I was getting into when I left Beirut. I thought it would be green like Beirut, but more remote. It was more brown than green and although there were not as many buildings, especially tall ones, there were still enough buildings around that I wouldn't call it rural. We turned off from the main road and were immediately greeted by tents everywhere. Although not officially recognized as one, this was a refugee camp for Muslims that had fled Syria.

We made our way down a narrow dirt road and finally arrived at the house of Brent's uncle. It was another tent house like all the other, except this one was torn down and built again rather recently. The floor was cement and the outer structure was made of wood with thick plastic for the roof and walls. It surprisingly looked well put together although there was no furniture in any of the rooms. Instead on the floors were rugs and pillows. Brent's relatives and friends had lots to say to us, and we stayed several hours until a meal was prepared. They had welcomed us with a feast and the food kept coming. They had prepared for us hot tea when we first arrived, but for the meal we were first greeted with a rice pilaf with chicken thrown in. There was also chucked corn with chicken thrown in. A yogurt that was entirely too strong was offered as a beverage. Daniel, one of the adults from Dar El Awlad, and I laughed as another adult, Mark, also from Dar El Awlad, downed about 5 cups - this includes both of our cups. Also among these dishes was a leafy salad and of course pita bread. I didn't know what to do so I put everything in my pita and rolled it up like I was making a burrito. The customary way to eat this was to break off a piece of pita, scoop some food up with the piece, and repeat. After the main course, we were served coffee, then Pepsi, and finally watermelon. I understood that they wanted to greet us well, but man was my tummy full!

Final Goodbyes
There is so much more to say, but I'm forever grateful for the kindness and warmth showed to us by Dar El Awlad - between the adults and children alike. The children loved to play with Elijah and the adults went out of their way to make us feel comfortable in an entirely new place. We all got to say our final goodbyes and Dar El Awlad even gave each of the volunteers a token made of Lebanese cedar. They also presented a beautiful painting of a Lebanese church to us. It is signed by the Dar El Awlad Oasis children. These are the children that came as refugees from Syra. The painting has these words: "One family, one body, one church". I'm very grateful I could enter into the lives of these Christians half-way around the world! Especially knowing that Jesus and his disciples would not have walked too far from this special place.
I went there knowing that we would be meeting and having fellowship with Syrian refugees, but unsure of what it would be like to see their customs and ways of living.

Upon arrival we were greeted with smiles, hand shakes and lots of kisses.

I truly enjoyed the time we spent with the ladies there. With the help of a young lady named Kassar and her translating, we were able to share so much about ourselves and to know more about them. The time there seemed to fly by. They prepared a delicious meal for us including chicken and rice with cashews, bread, salad, and yogurt. We weren't in a house, we weren't even sitting in chairs,we were in in a tent on the floor; but these ladies treated me with more compassion and generous hospitality than I ever have had in my life. The wooden floor didn't matter, no AC didnt matter. All the things they didnt have, doesnt matter. They all extended love and kindness and compassion in such a way that is the greatest I've ever experienced in my life.

It is a nice and cool day today in Lebanon. Right now I am sitting under the shade tree listening to the sounds of excited children playing soccer and laughter. It is a beautiful and joyous sound.

Yesterday we took the boys to the river up in the mountains. The water is freezing since the snow up the mountains melt and feed the river. Taking the boys there seems like such a simple thing to do. But it's so much more than that. This is the only time all year they get to come here. In this place the boys get to be boys. They get to forget their worries and what they have been through in such a short amount of time. They laugh and splash, jump off the cliff and teach the younger boys to swim. It was very life giving to watch the boys play. Without the funds raised to support this trip and these boys at DeA that wouldn't have been possible. Calvary paid for the bus to get the kids there and the entrance fee.

Earlier this week we handed out the shoes that Calvary members provided the kids. When we went to the boys units at night to visit, they were eager to show us their new shoes and the picture of those who 'sponsored' them. They would show us the picture and ask if we knew who gave them their new shoes. I find it so meaningful that the kids don't just care about receiving a gift. They really want to know the people that gave these gifts.

Tonight we head out to the Beqaa to visit with family of a DeA staff member. We have the opportunity to see how some of the refugees live. They have fled their homes in Syria and have seeked refuge here in Lebanon.

My current situation: I am sitting on the couch in the "tree house" apartment. My fan is on and all the windows are open refreshing me with a constant breeze. It is a little cooler today and it feels nice. I am listening to the buzz of the fan. I can hear the hammering and sawing on the new apartments being built up the hill. I'm listening to the birds and the bugs in the trees. This is such a beautiful place and the people here at dar alwad are so incredibly hospitable and compassionate it's overwhelming.
We leave in 3 days and my heart aches to stay a while longer. Just the thought of leaving has brought tears to my eyes. I want so much more time to spend with these boys. I want to show them all the love I possibly can in such short time. I want to give of myself all that I am able. I pray to God that it is in my favor for this to be my first trip but certainly not my last. I don't know if I can finish the days of my life having only been here once and for only a week. The days here are quite full and busy, but each moment that I stop to breath and look around........The joy floods my heart and the tears fill my eyes again. Coming to this place has been one of the greatest miracles in my life and I'm abundantly grateful that God saw fit for me to receive this miracle. My life and my eyes have been opened to more glory because of Lebanon.
Although, I must be live in honesty and say there is 1 thing I hate! Yes, I know most people probably wouldn't put that in a blog post for so many others to see, but I feel like I must.. SOMETHING I ABSOLUTELY HATE ABOUT LEBANON............ I have searched and searched and continued to search my phone and camera to find a photo that actually reflected the beauty I am seeing here! Not 1 single picture! At first I thought " why would God create a city too beautiful to be photographed!?!?!??", But I guess it is so people will keep coming back! 😁😁😁😁😁 Well, that could be a pretty good reason, and I think I am alright with that. I think I love the view of the city most at night. All of the lights sparkling across the hills and mountains is so stunning, and they seem to last for miles and miles. Even though this trip will end, I will enjoy every second will all the happiness and love I can endure; and even though I live many miles away, a part of Dar Awlad, Monsourieh, Lebanon will forever live close in my heart.

We had our usual Chapel, then helped the kids as they worked on in their workbooks, then we had a VBS program. But let's go back to the school workbooks and boys and summertime! It does not mix.
There was a lot of, "this is too hard" or "I don't understand it" or "you do the first one for me to show me how to do it."
I had some Syrian refugee boys at the table I was working with. They may have missed some years of education but they were trying hard to work on their math and English. They wanted me to check their work to make sure it was correct before they went on to the next problem. It was encouraging but made one wonder how much their country has lost in terms of education of the children and how will it recover those lost years.
After lunch we have a rest period. I know the rest period is designed for the boys but the team have learned to appreciate it.
Then it was play time. A lively soccer game ensued. Nathan showed off his fancy footwork and impressed the boys with how tough he is.
At 4:30 when the boys went up to their apartments, we were invited down for refreshments at the house of the Lebanese director of Dar el Awlad. Every year they have invited us down to say thanks for coming and supporting them.
After supper we set up to distribute the shoes and gifts for the staff that you so generously have given.
The boys have been asking about new shoes since we arrived. However, a particularly nasty rumor was being whispered that the suitcases were filled with more workbooks and school supplies!! Needless to say, this caused a bit of visible anxiety and I am sure anxiety that was not so visible.
All was put to rest when they walked into the chapel and saw the bags of shoes. They were all smiles as they received the bags and began to open them. Even before they pulled the shoes out of the bags, they searched for the letters you sent and wanted to see your pictures. Wanted to see who thought enough of them to send shoes and presents.
The first couple of years it was frenetic. The boys could not believe they were getting anything. This year I seem to notice a calmness. A sense that, yes, this is the team from Calvary. This is how they show they love us. It is as if they can depend on Calvary to show our love and support in this way.
The staff were also appreciative for the gifts, but also something more. Over and over again I heard, "Thank you for your support and encouragement."
This trip, has highlighted how much Calvary returning year after year means to, and encourages the staff.
The boys graduate from high school and move on, or drop out, or simply don't return but the staff are here serving year after year. It means a lot to the staff that a church at 18th and Bosque; called Calvary Baptist Church, remembers them, prays for them and sends representatives to come love the boys and courage the staff.
Not all of you can physically make the trip, but Calvary, your presence is very much here and very much appreciated.

Tim SmithJennifer Whitlarkhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09270037322054139697noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4550919287900822430.post-86627536445664182672017-07-04T10:27:00.002-07:002017-07-04T10:27:59.045-07:00More pictures!

Today was our first full day at Dar el Awlad with the boys. It was a very exciting and full day! We introduced ourselves (well the newbies were introduced since all the kids already know Tim). Today was my turn teaching the children's message for Chapel and a lesson for VBS. I must admit that I was pretty nervous leading up today since I have never led worship or a children's message before. But as God has been present this whole trip it was evident He was in that room with us. Although the boys know English, it isn't their primary language so I had a helper translate everything to Arabic for easier understanding. It really was beautiful to see the kids worshipping our God in both English and Arabic.

After Chapel, study time and VBS the kids had free time. Many of them played soccer and dodgeball. I didn't participate in either of these but it was a pleasure to see Nathan playing with the children and them accepting him. Elijah wanted to play soccer with the big kids so badly!! Elijah has been great and I am glad that Nathan and I decided to bring him as a family. This trip just wouldn't be the same without him. The boys have really loved on him and have been quite affectionate. Often the boys will come up to Elijah and give him a hug and kiss then pat his head or pinch his little rosy cheeks. Elijah loves being outside and gets pretty upset when he has to come inside. He has been chasing all the cats that live on DeA, riding a little red scooter down hills and playing soccer with the smaller boys.

One of the best aspects of being in Lebanon is the food!! We have had the pleasure of eating fresh fruits such as watermelon, cantaloupe, cherries and plums. We have also had so many Lebanese dishes that I can't pronounce but are so delicious such as hummus and this eggplant dip that's pretty amazing. On our way back from Byblos I had the opportunity to try the best ice cream I have ever tasted. The texture was different than American ice cream and the flavors I had weren't creamy or dairy based. I tried lemon, mulberry and rose ice cream and each flavor was delicious!! I wish we could go for ice cream every day! After tonight's dinner of eggplant dip, pita, veggies, olive loaf and cantaloupe, we went to spend some time with the boys in their 'houses'. We enjoyed watching them play soccer video games, chase Elijah and teach us how to properly pronounce their names. There are many sounds in the Arabic language that my tongue isn't used to speaking and we had many laughs together as we tried learning. Tomorrow we pass out the shoes that Calvary collected and I can't wait to see the look on their faces as they receive their bags!

I'm writing this from Dar El Awlad under a nice shade tree. The journey to Lebanon was long, but God gave us the endurance and patience that we desperately needed. We had one 15 hour flight followed by a 3 hour layover in Dubai and then a 3 1/2 hour flight to Beirut. Elijah was better than expected, especially since he only had a 3 hour nap during the first flight. It helps that he had a seat to himself and was able to stand up and jump around. Also, Emirates was a great airliners with good service and lots of entertainment for everyone. Not only did we have access to movies, tv, and news, but the screens behind each headrest had access to two cameras on the outside of the plane. One pointed directly in fron the of the plane and the other was directly underneath. I can't imagine how the flight attendants managed to look joyful and in good spirits despite the 15-hour flight. After 12 or so hours I was beginning to feel fatigue, definitely so once we left from Dubai, but I'm grateful that God gave us the energy to keep on.

Yesterday we toured the market at Biblos and saw some castle ruins. We walked the cobbled streets in search of Lebanon gifts and souvenirs. The market is one of the oldest in the world. It's great to think that Jesus' followers would have likely stepped foot in these same places.

Today we went to Resurrection Church in downtown Beirut. The service was entirely in Arabaic but we were able to hear a translation into English through headsets. It was almost a copy-and-paste of American contemporary churches. There was a band with a lead singer and guitar accompanied by two female singers and drums. The pastor explained five ways we can tell if the voice we are hearing is from God. I have to admit that I was entirely uncomfortable during the singing because I am so used to participating in church. It's weird to be doing nothing, and even then, I was not able to understand the lyrics. I didn't know until the very end that even the songs were translated through my headset. Yet, it's marvelous to see how Jesus is praised throughout all the world, even in the Middle East. And it was especially wonderful to hear how this church took in Iraqi and Syrian refugees.

Goodbye for now. It's been great being here. Elijah is doing well and we have lots of photos to share. The food has been delicious. I hope that Sheila 😉 can teach us how to make some of the dishes. I love the Mediterranean influence. My favorite so far has been the eggplant. It looks similar to hummus but tastes even better. Pray for us as tomorrow we start our Bible curriculum with the children. Upcoming we reveal the shoes to the kids (Tuesday) and then take a trip to the river on Wednesday.
14 hours until we depart Waco on Calvary’s 7th
Mission Trip to Lebanon. All the preparations are complete; all that is left is
getting there.

Those going on this trip are “first timers.” Since the first
trip, those that have gone have always included people who have gone before,
some for the second, third, fourth or fifth time. It will be interesting to see
Dar el Awlad, the boys and staff, through
new eyes.

In our discussions leading up to the first trip, one
condition laid down was that the Mission trip was not to be a “one and done,”
but rather a relationship building effort.

Calvary, you have done that in your praying, the continuing
support, and sending shoes to the same child year after year. The relationships
that you have built are evidenced in many ways: in the boys showing us your
pictures from the last several years as they and we have grown older, in being
greeted as friends rather than guests and in the genuine hugs that let you know
they are glad you have returned. Perhaps the most memorable way your
relationship was expressed, was when a housemother told one of the boys, “Don’t
cry, they are from Calvary, they always return.”

But why do we return? Last year I was talking to the
director about the boys that graduate from high school and move on with their lives,
asking him what impact DeA has had in their lives? His answer summed it up. “Not
all the boys accept Christ and go on in their faith journey when they leave
this place. We may not ever see the results. For some it may be 20 or 30 years
before we see results, but we have planted a seed. It is up to the Lord to
nurture the seed.”

Calvary, you are planting seeds, seeds in the lives of the
boys we are with and seeds in those that you send. For one couple from our
church, the Bouchers, this has meant moving to Lebanon to serve at DeA the last
6 years. For others that have gone on the trip, you will have to ask them how
the seeds have grown.

For the boys, you are helping to plant the seeds, and we
will show them all the love we can in the time we are there.

From the corner of 18th and Bosque, to West
Avenue, to Beirut Lebanon, Calvary you have shown the love of Christ, and are continuing
to do so.

I landed there as an answer to a prayer of mine the previous year. On the last day of camp I loaded my car with a heart full of fun summer memories, but something in me felt empty. I knew I wanted more, to go farther, to live a miracle filled life, to experience more in my life. I specifically remember praying to God and asking Him to open a door for me to go out and do something amazing. I asked Him to allow me to travel, but wherever I went, I wanted it to be all about Him.

I prayed that prayer in August 2016 and in February 2017, He answered that prayer. I can remember the day that Sheila invited me to be a part of this year's team to Lebanon. As I sat in the nursery rocking little Graham as he slept, I heard the Lord's voice so clearly in my ear, he said, "this is for you".

Since that day, when I heard His voice, not a single thing has deterred me from my faith in the miracles I know I will see on this trip. No matter what happens regarding politics, foreign affairs, my family afraid of me traveling so far away, etc...

I know God's hands are all over this mission.

My prayer is that God will work through me and that I will be divinely connected to His voice and Spirit so that I may touch as many lives as I can on this trip. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to go and work with these children.

My heart is filled with great excitement, joy, peace, and high expectations for a life changing trip. :-)

Here are my pre-trip thoughts for the blog:
We are about to set off to Lebanon. After years of seeing other teams embark, our time is near. We’ll leave Thursday morning to the airport and depart in the afternoon. Our team has been meeting and planning for months. We have been studying the history and culture of Lebanon. We’ve learned basic Arabic words. We’ve seen photos of previous trips, collected shoes, received an itinerary, and as of Saturday, we are packed. We’ve asked previous groups what to expect and have relayed our hopes as well as our fears. We’ve filled out all the necessary paperwork, received our passports, filed for trip insurance, and have made sure things at home will be taken care of while we are gone.

That’s a question that is usually asked on a daily basis. Elijah, are you ready to go to daycare? Lindsey, are you ready to eat? It’s something we think about internally during both large and trivial life decisions. Am I ready to go to bed or am I ready to have another child (both answers are usually ‘no’ by the way)?

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 11pt; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">After listing all the things we’ve done to prepare, you would think that our team is ready, right? Well, I can speak for the others, but I don’t feel ready. But I don’t know if I’ve felt ‘ready’ about any major life events besides finishing high school. That’s why I love Jesus’ call on our lives. He doesn’t expect us to be ready. He desires that we follow Him with total commitment. He expects us to just do it - to not make up excuses or ask for a raincheck. Look at how the disciples acted when Jesus called them to follow Him. They didn’t ask Jesus if they could follow Him when they were a bit older, or when they knew more about the Bible. They didn’t worry about the political state of things or if it was going to be safe. Jesus told them, “Come, follow me” and they did. I don’t feel ready, but I know that I need to step out in faith and follow Him. Jesus said that even a little faith can move a mountain. Well, if that’s the case, my faith should be more than enough. Jesus, I put my faith in you, and I commit to following you where you lead.

I can’t believe it is already the end of June and our trip is here! It feels like time has flown by since our first interest meeting!
I have wanted to be a part of this trip for some time now but for some reason or another I have been unable to go. I am so excited that this year I can finally go on this trip and minister to the children of Dar El Awad. Now, some would say Nathan and I are a little crazy for bringing our 20 month old but I am SO excited to share these moments with him and see the expressions on his face when he plays with the boys. I know that his smile and free spirit will be such a joy to the boys and the staff of DEA. Taking the trip to Lebanon definitely was not an easy decision. Nathan and I discussed one of us going and the other staying home with Elijah and I remember telling Tim that there was ‘no way’ I could bring a one year old on a 16 hour plane ride!!! After much prayer and discussion with Tim and Sheila I really felt that God was calling us to Lebanon and that Elijah will be fine to come with us (it’s just part of the adventure right?!!?). I am so excited to see the beautiful country of Lebanon and see what life for the boys is like inside the home. I am really looking forward to our time with the boys, leading a small portion of our VBS and taking the kids to the river.
All the while, my heart has been full and my mind has wandered on the sights, sounds, and people I left in Lebanon just 6 short days ago.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">People have asked how my trip was and I (still) can not put into words all of it - I tend to answer with "Amazing; Just amazing." I know that will not suffice for them, and to be honest it was so much more of that for me as well.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">The food was so fresh. The trend here is to eat fresh and 'whole' to be healthy, while in Lebanon it's just a way of life. The fruit stands above the rest - so fresh, so juicy, so full of flavor! The ice cream would be a close second!

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">My eyes were opened to a completely new culture. I realized how little I know about the things going on in the Middle East, and what life actually looks like there. I still don't fully understand it, but my heart is definitely more open and filled with compassion for people there.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Religion is more than a choice there. Religion is a way of life. And a conversion from your faith is often a removal from your family and heritage. While Lebanon has a Christian influence on their country - Muslims, Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Christians, and more all call this place home. I fully felt the weight of what it means to "Coexist" as I stood in the midst of the city and looked at all of these churches on every city block. I felt even more the need for the gospel to continue to be spread - and the weight of what that actually means.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Above all, the faces of the boys at Dar El Awlad have changed me. They were pictures on a Facebook page to me before I left. Then they became boys with a story as I spent the first few days there. Now they have a place in my heart! Everything from Syrian refugees, boys who have seen death and war, motherless, fatherless, disabled, and more. But they are boys - filled with life, energy, joy, and hope. And thanks to the wonderful people working with Kids Alive International, they are filled with a hope in Jesus. It was precious to listen to them recite verses that they knew, and while coloring a picture of the word 'shine' they would sing hymns and songs they knew from heart.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">There is so much more that I could say, and so many more words to describe how my heart has been changed. I will remember those smiling faces and thank God for the work He is doing in Lebanon, and in my life.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Thank you to all of you who prayed for us, and followed along as we served. Our God is great and is continuing to do mighty things in every village, nation, and tongue.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Eternally Grateful, and Faithfully His.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">

Vignettes of Lebanon Mission Trip 2016

Much was seen and done on this trip. How do you distill down
the sights, sounds, hugs, laughter, and humidity of the trip to Lebanon? You
can’t capture it all, but you try. Snapshots help.

The team experiencing a 15 hour flight….being greeted by
friends at the airport….seeing the excitement as the day light hours fade and
the Muslims who have fasted all day can finally eat….pulling into Dar el Awlad,
our home away from home….seeing the parking lot filled with tables and Muslim
Syrian refugees eating the food churches have prepared for them to break their
fast….showing them they are loved….much longed for sleep….the team learning
that breakfast can be pita bread, olives, cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, zartaar
and olive oil….worshiping in a foreign language….not needing the instant
translation headphones to feel at one with fellow believers…sightseeing….entering
a mosque that was built in the 1100’s by
the Crusaders as a church….greeting boys we remember from previous trips….morning
devotionals….trying to get boys to do schoolwork in the summer….the number of
times the boys have to get a drink or use the bathroom when the schoolwork is
on the table….eyes watching the clock as it ticks oh, so slowly towards 10:30
and break time….how rapidly the exhaustion brought on by schoolwork dissipates
at break time….chapel service and the excitement to learn a new song and
movements….wanting to sing the “Banana song”….lunch and a much needed rest
period….playing with the boys….marveling at the boys footwork in
soccer….supper….visiting with the boys in their apartments….excitement as we
board the buses to the river….realizing that some of the boys must be
profoundly deaf as they do not seem to hear the driver’s instructions to keep
heads and hands inside the bus windows…..watching the bravado to jump off the
rock into the river reded with each step that leads them higher….complaining the river is
too cold then getting right back in….hungry boys devouring lunch….tired boys
passing out on the ride from the river….supper….visiting the boys in their

being quiet looking at the mountains that define the Syrian border….some of the
boys are quiet too….thoughts of home?....the excitement of feeding a

Jason and Hannah shared in bible study that God calls us to be courageous. Courage could also be described as bravery, and boldness. And God gives us the courage through His promise that He will never leave us, nor forsake us. And our God is faithful!

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Hannah started our morning off with the devotional on the fruits of the spirit. That act demanded great courage for a girl of nine years old.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">The boys worked hard on their studies this morning and then enjoyed a great bible study from both Jason and Hannah.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">The boys got up and sang loudly and danced at some worship songs. It takes great courage to step out, dance and sing at the top of your lungs. One young boy that doesn't speak English very well watched and mimicked every move I made, and even started singing along - "I have decided to follow Jesus...".

In the afternoon we decided to play some games with the kids. All the way from the US we brought Pie Face and Bean Boozled. Pie Face is a game of chance where you could, quite possibly, receive a handful of whipped cream to your face.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Bean Boozled is a game involving Jelly Beans that are the same color, and while one might taste good, the other could be some disgusting flavor. (I.e. Tutti-Fruiti and Stinky Socks are the same pink hue.) The boys took turns on each of these games, risking a nasty flavored jelly bean or a face full of whipped cream on each turn. As silly as these games were, many boys showed bravery with each click of the handle or as they carefully selected each jelly bean.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">This evening was complete with a joyous evening out with our host families. We ate at a gorgeous Lebanese restaurant in the heart of Beruit. There was not one food I was familiar with, and it took boldness to try so many new dishes. I am thankful that the food here in Lebanon is both fresh, and delicious.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">Boldness. Bravery. Courage. These terms often feel more appropriate in a Marvel movie about superheroes than it does in our everyday life. We all want to be brave. We want to come to the rescue and save the day! I was made to realize today that courage is more in the little things than it is in the movies. Life demands us to be courageous - to stand up to the bully, to try something new, to love the person who hurts you, to say something to a loved one that they don't want to hear, to stand up in front of others, to share about Jesus to another, to step foot on the plane and "Go!". God tells us, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)
<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">My trip started off with great fear and anxiety. I am ending my trip with the personal experience and a better understanding of courage.

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">As today was our last full day with the boys. Many of the boys came to the same realization today as they begged and pleaded for us to stay longer. We all shared a few moments in denial that they time has finally come to soon let. To me, that is verification that they feel loved. And that is confirmation of our team's success, and of the unfailing, faithful promise of God.
Today we went on another field trip. This time we went to a dairy farm in the
Bakaa Valley. The Bakaa Valley is to the
East of Beirut. The farm had some
animals and vineyards and a beautiful walk around a lake. The boys had plenty of space and run (and
run, and run!) and get their energy out.
We had a picnic lunch when we arrived and then walked through the
farm. We saw cows, horses, deer, goats,
sheep, peacocks, and birds.

The boys enjoyed the activity and love anything outdoors
(though they did get hot toward the end!).
As we drove east from Beirut and topped the hill toward the valley I
heard them all begin shouting about seeing Syria. You can see the mountain range from the Bakaa
Valley and Syria is just on the other side of the mountains. Sadly, many of them know about the horrible
struggles in Syria first hand. I just
know it from the news but many of these boys have fled Syria and even still
have family there. It was eye opening to
hear them talk about Syria and continue to point to the mountains. All I could do was pray for God’s
intervention and peace. One thing I always take away from here when I come are faces and stories with current world struggles. I hear about Syrian refugees from the comfort of my home in America but here I am thrust out of my comfort zone physically and emotionally when I see their sweet faces and learn of their stories and struggles first hand. I need to hear and know these things and be reminded of them often!

Otherwise, the bus ride was as you can imagine it would be with a bunch of energetic boys! They all loved it and so did I!

As we were driving back the bus broke down. So, no need to worry, as the bus situation was being worked out all the boys were treated to ice cream! They loved it! The bus ended up making it back a bit later than the rest of us and we were thankful for that.
A note from Hannah on today:

Today was a good day. I was so close to Syria for the first time. It made me feel nervous but then I felt better. The bus ride was loud and chaotic but sweet also. I like playing with the boys a lot. I was scared to know that some of the boys were staying behind when the bus broke down. I was worried and scared for them. Then I felt great when I knew they got back safely. We had an awesome dinner tonight with the Bouchers who are a great family. Today I was asked if I would like to come back to Lebanon and I said “YES!”

To say they were delighted was an understatement! They receive the shoes and gifts with such joy and gratitude. It truly is like Christmas morning. They were so thankful to Calvary and the individual families who bought the shoes for them.
This has become a tradition for us to bring shoes to the boys. It is certainly a practical gift that we can give but it has become so much more. The families at Calvary have embraced the boys and even though most of them have never been to Lebanon with us they gladly join us in this way. This was such a sweet day for all involved.

First, I (Jason) want to thank God for the chance to be with
the boys and all who live and work here at Dar el Awlad today. I had apparently torn a muscle yesterday
trying to be a 41- year- old man playing soccer with a bunch of young athletic
boys. When I woke up I was unable to get out of bed. Tim and Dr. John (an
adopted team member who is here spending time with his sponsored boys) provided
excellent medical care and got me to a point where I could travel with the boys
to the river and be there with them.

Today we started out with a devotional by Kelly, who explained
the meaning of the colors of the balls we brought from Baylor. She hit on key
aspects of the gospel with the boys.

Then we loaded up the vans for a day at the River. Many of the kids waded into the icy-cold
water. They screamed both with sounds of joy and shock as they would submerge themselves
and splash one another. The group also found their way to the upper river areas
for a day of testing their courage as the stood looking down a 20 foot drop
into the waters. Abboud probably jumped off the rock 19 times. Even Hannah got
into it asking some fretting boys to move out of her way while she ran and
launched herself off the cliff at least 6 times.

This was a day filled with fun, fellowship, and joy. The boys
delighted in the simple pleasure of playing with one another and of enjoying
themselves in a beautiful part of God’s creation. Today, I witness to God’s new
creation life at Dar el Awlad. I see it most in the deep and abiding love of
those who live here and devote their lives to care for these boys year around. These
boys who all have had difficult lives are surrounded with the love of God by
all who work here. Most of all the boys are told about the hope God has for us
through Jesus Christ. Both of these have

Today was our first full day here in Lebanon. It was filled with a lot of wonderful activities all of which were characterized by fellowship. I found this fellowship to be meaningful, fun, deep, joyful, but most of all it constituted worship for me today.

4 of us attended church with the Bouchers while Tim attended with another Dar El Awlad staff member. We enjoyed Resurrection Church and loved worshiping with believers from all over the world. It is in fact a small world though. We met a man at the service who was visiting Lebanon from Portland, Oregon. He was serving in Lebanon at a dental camp. He asked where we were from and we told him Waco, TX. We quickly found out that both of his kids attended Baylor recently and graduated from there. Love the connections that are made around the world.

After lunch there was a cut throat game of foosball in the dining hall. In Lebanon they call foosball "baby foot" because it is a baby version of football (remember football here means soccer). Many more games of "baby foot" have already taken place and are likely to still come.
The boys already got into the large stash of Baylor balls that we brought. There is much fun to be had with these boys and the sports equipment this week!
Tonight we go to sleep after a full day of wonderful fellowship. We will wake up tomorrow and begin our week of activities with the boys (devotionals, bible studies, tutoring, field trips, and outdoor activities). I always look forward to our time with them all. There is much excitement in the air and I am confident that God is at work. Please be praying for our time this week to be meaningful and spirit filled.
Thanks for joining us on this journey.
